For this map we were to find potential locations for a youth center housed within residential districts, using Census 2000 data for population in the 5-17 age group, a zone layer for land use types, and a file of available buildings. We had to join two datasets and then make a selection (by attributes, i.e. type of land use + age of population) from within the new united dataset, and a further selection, this time by location, of the available buildings.
This was fairly straightforward, though it took me some time to figure out where the 4th data file (youth population) was in the folders: it wasn't retrievable through "Add Data" (which showed only three of the files), only through "Open Files". I have not yet figured that out: all 4 files seem to be in the same folder, judging from the "source" tab on the left of the ArcMap display, but one of them is not visible via one of the two data access routes.
This was the first time I have tried making a template, and I was relieved to see that it was relatively painless. I'm also happy to have discovered "Zoom to Layer" and "Zoom to Selection" (or thereabouts).
